Find a Mentor
Winter Session is a perfect time to build your professional network! Two of the best ways to make connections are through informational interviews and mentoring.
Learn Through Informational Interviews
Not only can informational interviews give you insight into possible career paths and how to leverage your Notre Dame education, you are also building out your professional network for the future. Set a target for Winter Break -- one contact per week is a nice start.
The two most common ways to find professionals to interview are IrishCompass and LinkedIn.
Notre Dame’s official online professional networking community, IrishCompass is designed to provide a virtual space for students and the Notre Dame family to collaborate and grow professionally through group and individual connections. IrishCompass currently features more than 13,000 Notre Dame alumni. Search for alumni by employer, job function, location, class year and more.
More than 40,000+ Notre Dame alumni can be found on LinkedIn. Use Winter Session as a time to build your professional network by setting a target for connections. Start with a goal of making 2 connections per day -- look for professionals at organizations where you want to work, have a similar background as you, or just sound interesting! Not sure where to start? Make connections with our staff.
Find a Mentor on IrishCompass
Taking informational interviews a step further, you can also use Winter Session as a time to find a mentor. A mentor can….
- assist you with advice on growing as a professional
- help you set professional growth goals for their time at Notre Dame and beyond
- serve as a resource for you for any questions, advice, resources, networking, and development
- help you explore careers and transition to the world of work
We make it easy to find a mentor. More than 3,500 alumni have expressed interest in serving as a mentor.
How To Connect with an Alum
Not sure how to introduce yourself to an alumni? Here's a template you can work from.
Dear Mr./Ms. Alum,
I am a sophomore marketing major at Notre Dame who is interested in discovering more about the public relations. I saw your profile on LinkedIn.
I am interested in learning more about your career path and any advice you have as I consider working in public relations.
Would you have time for a 15-minute phone call?
I am free anytime Monday, Wednesday and Friday before noon EST, Tuesday and Thursday after 3PM EST.
I’m sure you have many demands on your time so I thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you.
